Every racing pigeon wears a ring with a code that tells you where it came from, what year it was born, and its unique serial. Here is how to decode GB, BE, NL, SU and other ring numbers — and where to look a bird up by ring.
A standard racing pigeon ring carries up to four pieces of information:
The code is printed on a closed ring that is slipped over the foot of a chick a few days old, so it is normally safe to treat the year as the bird's birth year.
| Ring number | What it means |
|---|---|
| GB26B12345 | Great Britain, 2026, series B, serial 12345 |
| GB21N0678901 | Great Britain, 2021, series N, serial 0678901 |
| BE22-3021492 | Belgium, 2022, serial 3021492 |
| NL18-1412086 | Netherlands, 2018, serial 1412086 |
| SU23D88901 | Scotland, 2023, series D, serial 88901 |
| N24Y123456 | Northern Ireland, 2024, series Y, serial 123456 |

Prefixes can vary between organisations and between years. When in doubt, ask the issuing union or the loft the bird came from.
PigeonIQ runs a free, searchable global database of racing pigeons built by the community. Enter a ring number to see a bird's public profile, pedigree, and race results — or to add that ring to your own loft.
Search the pigeon databaseMost strays are simply tired. A racing pigeon that lands in a garden has usually been blown off its line or caught by bad weather, and one night of rest is often all it needs. If the bird looks fit and the weather is clear, release it in daylight so it has the full day to fly home.
A ring number identifies an individual pigeon. It encodes the country of origin (letters at the start, e.g. GB, BE, NL, SU), the year of birth (two digits for British and most European rings), and a serial number. Many British rings also include a series letter. Together these make each bird's identity unique.
Take GB26B12345: GB is Great Britain, 26 is the year 2026, B is the series letter of the ringer who supplied the ring, and 12345 is the serial number. British rings are usually applied in the year the bird is born, so the two-digit number is a reliable birth year.
Belgian rings look like BE22-3021492: BE is Belgium, 22 is 2022, and 3021492 is the serial. Dutch rings look like NL18-1412086: NL is the Netherlands, 18 is 2018, and 1412086 is the serial. These rings are also applied in the bird's year of birth.
Yes. PigeonIQ runs a free global pigeon database. Enter a ring number to find a bird's public profile, pedigree, and race history — or to register that you own it. Search a ring in the PigeonIQ database.
GB21N0678901 is a British ring from 2021: GB is Great Britain, 21 is the year 2021, N is the series letter, and 0678901 is the serial number.
Write the ring number down exactly, search it in the PigeonIQ database, and report it to the union that issued the ring. For GB rings that is the RPRA. Give the bird water and a quiet, safe place to rest. Most strays are tired rather than injured, and many fly home the next day.
